Govt preparing to extend UN-OHCHR's term by six months The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has forwarded a proposal to the Council of Ministers to extend the term of United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (UN-OHCHR) by another six months. The OHCHR, and other UN bodies and diplomatic agencies in Nepal have been pressuring the government to extend its term by two years. UN-OHCHR had written to the foreign ministry a few days ago to extend its term by two years. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is not positive on extending OHCHR's term for long due to differences between the UN-OHCHR and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). NHRC has been saying, an international human rights agency is not necessary in Nepal when there is a national one doing the same job. nepalnews.com |
